Youngsters who yearn for the theater can hone their acting skills at home by attending one of the Whidbey Children’s Theatre’s upcoming online classes.
Registration is now open for “All About the Games,” a class full of theater games, and “Yes, And …,” an improv class.
Cait Cassee, who is instructing the classes for the Langley theater, said the winter classes are meant to be “light and fun.” Newbies to theater are welcome to join in the fun, since the classes won’t be as complex as they were during the fall.
The theater’s fall offerings focused on script-writing and a recorded vignette production and were a success, prompting more online classes, albeit of a less dense variety. The online play, Cassee said, resulted in a total of 82 rehearsal hours.
The newest batch of classes will provide an outlet for theater kids, who have missed each other, to reconnect and have some fun together, “flexing those rusty theater muscles,” Cassee said.
One class will revisit beloved theater games the kids know well, and another will delve into improv acting.
The latter class, Cassee explained, is good for both young actors who love the improvisational format of acting and those who are worried about it and want to improve.
“I think the whole planet should take improv classes,” Cassee said.
Classes are 45 minutes long and meet five times, from the beginning of February to the beginning of March. Kids will be in cohorts of eight or fewer per class. Classes are $75 each.
A third class, which focuses on yoga movement for actors, is free of charge and runs one day only, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
Sommer Harris, an alum of the theater, will be teaching students of the class on how to explore the connection between yoga and theater. The class is for older kids, ages 14 to 19.
