A Coupeville food bank was the recipient of a sizable donation after 25 Scouts BSA members collected more than 1,000 food items.

Members of Troop 4058 of Scouts BSA, formerly known as Boys Scouts of America, collected the donations over the past two weekends along with younger scouts from Cub Scout Pack 4058.

The troop put together 60 full bags of food for Gifts from the Heart Food Bank in Coupeville.

“There haven’t been many food drives since the pandemic began so we were really grateful for this one,” said Aloha Hart, a 12-year volunteer at the food bank. “They did a marvelous job.”

Hart said that the number of people coming to the food bank had swelled last year during the coronavirus pandemic, but that the need has mostly returned to 2018 or 2019 levels now.

Fourteen-year-old Preston Howard helped lead the scouts’ drive. He said the scouts usually do a food drive every year but missed it last year because of COVID-19.

The Scouts enjoyed the service project this year and wanted to thank donors, he added.

“Thanks for donating all this food,” Howard said.

Gifts from the Heart Food Bank is located at 203 North Main St. in Coupeville and is open 2-5 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.
