More than 1,000 runners will be on the road this Sunday for the Whidbey Island Marathon and the event’s companion races.
The marathon will begin at 7 a.m. at Pass Lake on Fidalgo Island and end at Windjammer Park in Oak Harbor. Highway 20 will be closed from Rosario Road to Ducken Road, including the Deception Pass Bridge, from 7-7:45 a.m. on Sunday for the marathon runners.
Drivers will see more road closures as part of the half marathon race. The routes for the half marathon, the 10k run, the 5k run and the kids’ 1k run all begin and end at Windjammer Park.
The eastbound curb lane of Pioneer Way from Highway 20 to Southeast City Beach Street will be closed from 6-10 a.m. Southwest Scenic Heights Street will be open to local access only from 6 a.m. to noon. The northbound lane of Southwest Balda Street from Southwest Scenic Heights Street to West Miller Road will be closed from 6 a.m. to noon. The westbound lane of West Miller Road from Southwest Scenic Heights Street to Balda Street will be closed from 6 a.m. to noon. The northbound lane of West Scenic Heights Road and Penn Cove Road will be closed from 6 a.m. to noon.
There are 200 runners in the marathon, 600 runners in the half marathon, and 400 runners in the 10k and 5k races.
