Barton Cole: January 5, 1963 – December 21, 2021

Barton Andreas Cole – Naturalist, Poet, Philosopher, Cook

Barton Cole passed away due to natural causes on the Winter Solstice, December 21, 2021, at his home in Langley, Washington. Barton was born in Seattle, the fourth child of James and Maxine Cole. He grew up in Edmonds, Browns Point, and Ballard, spending most of his adult life in Langley.

Barton developed a love of reading at a young age and read voraciously his entire life, following his avid curiosity, and attaining much of his vast knowledge through books. Charming and witty, Barton was a prolific captivating writer, sharing his passion for food, animals (especially crows), nature, and life in general. His work can be perused at bartoncole.com.

An outstanding cook, Barton spent the early days of his professional career in the restaurant industry in Seattle before moving to Whidbey Island with his young family. He relished preparing delicious meals for all and sundry. Believing that food is an integral tie that binds us, he used his talents on behalf of many charitable community efforts, including Hearts and Hammers, both on the front lines and in the kitchen.

Barton was an excellent gardener, integral in making Hedgebrook and Meerkerk Gardens the pristine oases they are today. He lovingly cared for the grounds of his clients over the years, many of whom became friends. Most at home in the natural world, he had an innate awareness of and boundless love for its wonder, and he reveled in sharing that joy with one and all. He could (and would!) expound on the song of the Winter Wren, the habits of the Douglas squirrel, or the quirks of his beloved crows, many of whom had names. Barton’s love of kitties ran deep…

Barton left this world much too soon and is missed by his many human and animal friends. He is survived by his son Maxin Cole-Takanikos, former spouse Joni Takanikos, daughter Jasmine Takanikos, sister Gretchen, and brothers Jon and Dan. Barton’s Celebration of Life will be at Freeland Hall Sunday, May 1st from 1pm to 5 pm. Tributes will commence at 2pm.

Contributions in Barton’s memory can be made to Friends of Friends Medical Support Fund
