No one was injured in a South Whidbey fire started by a riding lawn mower on Aug. 7.

The mower, however, was a total loss.

Firefighters from South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded to the Crow Haven Road residence around 2:30 p.m. that day, according to Public Information Officer Jon Gabelein.

According to details from the fire district’s Facebook post about the incident, the fire burned about one-tenth of an acre of dry grass.

“The operator reported that the mower engine stopped just before the mower caught fire, which suggests that the grass may have gotten wound up in the drive belt, stalling the engine,” the post stated.

The fire district recommended that rotary mowers are not used to cut dry grass, especially during hot, dry weather. Mower blades can strike a rock and emit sparks, which can easily cause a fire in the right conditions.
