Downtown Langley is all dressed up for the holidays.
Businesses around the downtown area have pulled out all the stops for the Deck the Doors competition sponsored by the Langley Main Street Association. Doors are decorated with festive greenery accented with metallics and even dolls.
The group hopes to create an outdoor gallery for visitors during the winter season. More than 40 stores participated in the event to win the competition, with some business owners decorating their own doors.
Michele LaRue, owner of Big Sister, designed her door for the third year. This year, she said she was inspired by Mexican tin work. LaRue cut out shapes from tin material and attached them in a pattern to her door.
“I like to make fun and whimsical decorations,” she said. “I like the shiny things.”
Artists collaborated with shop owners and some were paired by members of the Langley Main Street Association.
Susan Jensen, an artist who paints pet portraits, was told to contact Animal Hospital by the Sea. It turned out to be a good fit, she said.
Jensen used prints from her pet caricatures attached to garlands to outline the door of the animal hospital.
The contest is simple. All doors must have been decorated by Wednesday, Nov. 27. Five doors will be selected as the winners, with each artist receiving $1,000. Winners will be announced Saturday, Dec. 21.
The winner of a $1,000 Langley shopping spree will also be announced on the same day.
