Fashion-forward store opens in Bayview

Versace sunglasses, Gucci fragrances and Kate Spade handbags are just a few of the popular designer brand names that can be found in Island Boutique, a new shop in the Bayview area located in the strip mall next to the Goose Grocer.

Liz Smith and her mother, Ron Smith, are the curators behind Island Boutique, carefully selecting used and new clothing, shoes and purses to display, making a trip to a mainland outlet mall obsolete. What you find in the store is the real deal.

“Purses, they’re not knock-offs,” Liz said. “They’re real Coach, Michael Kors, things like that.”

Though the vast majority of the store caters to women, a small men’s corner holds sunglasses, wallets, watch bands and cologne.

“Perfume and cologne are a big thing right now ‘cause there’s really no place on the island to get a variety,” Liz said.

Kids in particular love the colorful bottles of Sol de Janeiro perfume mist.

“The younger girls are really wild about it,” Ron said. “It is cute. They come running in the door and just go straight for it.”

Island Boutique officially opened this past April.

“I’ve had a few careers on the island, and worked at public health, and I just decided I wanted to work for myself, work for us,” Liz said.

Liz is a longtime South Whidbey resident who grew up on the island.

“We moved here when she was about 18 months old,” Ron said.

Mystery grab bags and raffle prizes – the last one for a giant pink Stanley cup – add to the fun of Island Boutique.

All sizes, colors and styles of clothing can be found on the racks. Liz said the most popular item is a jumpsuit that has sold out multiple times.

A small fitting room in the back of the shop – decorated with a stool shaped like a high-heeled shoe and a neon sign that reads “Hello Gorgeous” — allows customers to try it before they buy it.

On occasion, the shop does accept donations that are in good condition, but Liz encourages people to call ahead at 360-969-5992 before bringing anything in.

Island Boutique is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and is located at 14485 Highway 525 in the Bayview area.
