JADE Craftsman Builders of Freeland will take part in the fifth annual Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association’s 2009 Tour of Homes this weekend.

The event is a scattered-site home tour that features 14 homes in Island and Skagit counties.

JADE’s featured home is at 3678 Hidden Creek Way in Clinton. The home was designed by Ross Chapin Architects and it sits on 10 acres with territorial views.

It has just over 1,700 square feet of space, including two baths, two bedrooms and an office. Construction included the use of sustainably harvested local wood, a solar hot water system and infrastructure for a photovoltaic system. It boasts a metal roof and other “green” features, and exceeds Built Green Level 3 criteria.

According to JADE Craftsman Builders, the kitchen was designed to re-use the homeowner’s classic gas range and an antique Japanese kitchen Tansu. Other unique features include a turn-of-the-century antique grain-storage cabinet that was adapted to be the home’s recycle center, and a passively cooled root cellar to store garden vegetables.

The tour is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13.
