Pinball wizards can face John Wick at ax-throwing joint

Those who have dreamed of swerving from stray bullets in John Wick’s 1969 Ford Mustang Boss, receiving commands from the manager of the legendary criminal hotel The Continental and slithering through the Red Circle nightclub now have that chance at Tossin’ Axes in Oak Harbor.

The axe-throwing arcade held a launch party Friday for its twelfth pinball machine, which has come a long way from actual pins hammered into a table. The new machines might even be unrecognizable to those who grew up with the Space Cadet pinball game pre-installed on their Windows ‘95 computer. Designed with cinematic-level details and integrated with artificial intelligence to ensure a new experience with every play, this is a machine meant to compete with today’s fast-paced action flicks and first-person shooter games.

In fact, all these mediums are starting to blend. Through Stern Pinball’s Insider Connected app, players can track progress, earn achievements, take on special quests and complete faction contracts to increase their assassin ranking.

Tossin’ Axes patrons earned their rankings through the kick-off tournament, leaving with movie posters, model cars and more.

The table, manufactured by Stern Pinball, highlights the iconic settings of the John Wick franchise with neon-noir style. With the pinball, players can open Wick’s weapons crate, use the blood oath marker and take on jobs for the factions of The High Table.

“A marker is no small thing,” Santino D’Antonio says to John Wick in the second film, as Wick attempts to complete a task assigned by a member of The High Table. “For a man to grant a marker to another, is to bind a soul to a blood oath.”

Everything in the game, the lights, the sounds and even the enemies, are game-to-game-specific; the experience changes with each shot of the pinball.

With the app, players can scan a QR code on any Stern Pinball machine, revealing a network and ranking system of players across the world.

While the launch party is one-and-done, Tossin’ Axes plans to have monthly pinball tournaments via the International Flipper Pinball Association, said manager Daniel Cadwell.

“(We’ve) been there for almost a year now,” he said, “and I still get people coming in and they’re like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know this place existed,’ and yeah, we got all this stuff.”
