Oak Harbor is offering an alternative to dating apps and bar meetups.
Tossin’ Axes on Midway Boulevard will hold multiple nights of speed dating starting Labor Day weekend, split up by age group. For those who are more familiar with apps like Tinder, Hinge and Bumble, this won’t be so different, according to the event’s host.
Limited to 10 men and 10 women per night, dates will last about five minutes. After the “date,” each partner will swipe left or right by marking a card privately. After meeting all 10 people over the course of an hour, the matches will be revealed privately by the host at the end of the night.
On an app, some want to skip past the virtual façade and cut straight to getting a feel for a person in the room. Tossin’ Axes provides a safe, structured way to do so. The tables will even have icebreaker questions keeping things smooth.
“We have about 25 or 26,000 people in the city of Oak Harbor proper,” said Donna DeBonis, organizer of the event. “The North End of the island has, I believe, a lot more of a younger generation here and this seemed like it was a good opportunity to allow people to meet up under circumstances that were very safe and in person.”
Check in from 7-7:30 p.m. for 10 dates running from 8-9 p.m. Tossin’ Axes serves all kinds of drinks including local craft beer and cider.
The 25-30 age bracket starts on Friday, Aug. 30, and 31-35 takes place Saturday night. Age ranges go up in events through September. Reserve a spot for $25 at tossinaxes.com/speeddating.
