As a member of the Whidbey Island Chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby, I’m writing to let the community know about an upcoming day of action and community outreach.

On Sunday, Aug. 21, from noon until 4 p.m., Citizens Climate Lobby members will be assembled at the Clinton ferry dock to remind individuals about the urgency and immediacy of dramatic climate change and to disseminate information about actions that we, as individuals, can take to work toward a brighter, more sustainable future.

As we enjoy the cool summer and beautiful skies here in the Northwest, much of our country has experienced prolonged periods of record-breaking high temperatures and drought. Devastating droughts, floods, storms and fires (all resulting directly or indirectly from climate change) have occurred worldwide.

As a national organization, the Citizens Climate Lobby is aimed at creating the political will to change in ways that will help to ensure a sustainable future. At the Clinton ferry dock we will be talking with visitors and neighbors about pending federal legislation, known as Carbon Fee and Dividend, that would reduce harmful levels of dangerous carbon emissions while, at the same time, create local green jobs and return monetary dividends to our households.

As part of our ongoing “Million Letter March” project, we will encourage folks to write personal notes to their congressmen about the importance of adopting the Carbon Fee and Dividend approach. Citizens Climate Lobby volunteers will be available to answer questions and hand out literature on climate change, fee and dividend and the importance of working together to ensure a sustainable future.
