To the editor:

“We all love Paul,” (Edgecliff resident,  July 11, city council meeting) and do I have a bridge for you all!

The Edgecliff Prop. 1 “usual suspects” (Kortebein, Record) insist this is about effective government and not personalities and I agree on both counts: our mayor-council form of government for 1,100 spirits is working just fine and with few exceptions it is not about personalities — but personal agendas.

Councilman Gilman proposes to take away existing land use rights from some residents (determined by?) and “some money will go … to owners of land that does not get developed” (Gilman TDR proposal). How is this accomplished? By changing the power structure in Langley, not from ineffective to effective government but from strong mayor to strong council with the new “mayor” from that council.

Connect the dots and vote no on Prop. 1. as it stands for: no growth vs. reasonable growth; an invisible fence and gate around Edgecliff (actually, not a bad idea); no employee parking lots; save the blackberries; planning by monopoly; and “community cells” (Gilman, circa 2004) for everybody.

Vote no!
