The current political season has been a long one and promises to get more intense as we head toward Election Day. I would like to appeal to those who write letters to the editor and ask them to please keep your opinions focused on the issues.

I am disheartened, and at times, disgusted by the venom with which some speak out. The party affiliation aside, to attack politicians and insult them with such hateful words and such hostility is not only inappropriate, it is downright disrespectful.

For example, in a recent letter by Fred Wilferth in the Whidbey News-Times on Aug. 24, he writes with such insulting commentary about Joe Biden and Jimmy Carter. Please have some respect for two human beings who have served our country in a way Mr. Wilferth doesn’t understand. It’s not about being a Democrat, Republican or Independent, nor should it be a personal attack on those with whom you disagree. It’s about human decency and gratitude for elected officials who have given their lives to public service. Also, many new young voters are registering to vote and paying closer attention. Their reading of such vitriol and experiencing the lack of civility in one’s words are certainly not setting a good example for intelligent, adult behavior and discourse.

So, I ask Mr. Wilferth, and others, to please stop degrading others you don’t like. If you choose to write something, please talk about issues and policy. We are all human beings and need more positivity and kindness in this very upsetting state of affairs in our country.
