Editor,
On Saturday, I enjoyed participating in Oak Harbor’s MultiCultural March and Diversity Celebration. When I parked down at Windjammer Park, it was easy to find the group because the group itself was multicultural and diverse. And as I got closer I could see that many people had signs and were wearing colors associated with diversity and community such as the queer/trans pride flag and the Mexican flag. It was a cold day but the group gave off a warmth in attitude — lots of smiles and good humor. I was happy to see a few faces I recognized and was encouraged to see many strangers who I hope will become friends.
Even though I didn’t completely agree with all the symbols and messages, I was happy to be around people who cared about democracy and were moved to action. After a little while of congregating we left the park for a march around the City Beach area. Along Pioneer Way many people honked and waved from their cars in support of our messages: “Freedom Is The Liberation Of All Oppressed People,” “Be Kind To Each Other” and “People Over Profit.”
During the march I had a great conversation with a friend about the importance of learning from the natural world and building networks of care. All of us have challenges and struggles and by connecting with each other, sharing resources and taking risks, we can overcome any obstacle no matter how overwhelming it often seems. Despite the windy conditions the vibe of the march remained cheerful. When we got back to the park people planned to get together again in the future to continue showing support for communities under attack.
I was happy to spend a small part of my weekend participating in the march — meeting new people and demonstrating that Oak Harbor is also a place that emphasizes love and solidarity. These types of public events are one important way to counter the hate and fear that is being administered in our country.
I hope that more people from all over the island will join us in the future. Especially you! As the great labor activist Grace Lee Boggs said, the only way to survive is by taking care of each other. A big “thank you” to the organizers of the event!
