Letter: School levies are investment in future

Editor,

As a parent of a South Whidbey High School student, I urge you to support our public schools by voting “yes” on the SWSD school levies on the November ballot. These two levies are not new taxes. They’re extensions of existing levies that will maintain the current tax rate. Your yes vote ensures that our schools continue to provide the high-quality education our children deserve.

The Capital Projects/Technology Levy provides essential tech upgrades for our students, teachers, and classrooms, enabling them to access the tools and resources they need to succeed. In an increasingly digital society, it’s imperative that our schools prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the future, with digital literacy and critical thinking skills.

The Educational Programs and Operations Levy is just as vital, supporting a wide range of programs that are not fully funded by the government. It’s a common misconception that government funding fully covers essential staff like librarians, counselors, and substitute teachers, but the reality is that these roles are funded by this levy. Additionally, the levy provides for athletics, arts, and music programs, transportation, food service, and more.

By voting yes on these levies, we’re investing in the future of our community. We’re ensuring that our children have access to the resources and opportunities they need to succeed, both in and out of the classroom. We’re supporting the dedicated teachers and staff who work tirelessly to provide a high quality education. And we’re demonstrating our commitment to the wellbeing and prosperity of our community.

So join me in voting YES on both school levies, which support our schools, our teachers, and our students. Let’s invest in the future of our community and ensure that our children continue to thrive.
