Letter: Support levy for safer, more secure schools

Editor,

All across the country, the threat of violence in and around schools weighs heavily on our students, our families, and the community. We are alerted to this threat almost daily, whether it’s through a news headline or our own children telling us about an active shooter drill they had during their day.

Our students deserve to learn in schools that are safe and secure from the threats that exist around us. Technologically advanced security features like intercom systems with video surveillance, perimeter fencing, and swipe card entry systems, as well as hardening features like bulletproof glass, metal detectors, panic button, and sheltered spaces increase safety and save lives, but come at a cost. Sadly, there are no dedicated state funding sources for school districts like ours to make safety improvements to existing facilities.

It is up to us! Our students and faculty are counting on district voters to approve the upcoming levy so that the Oak Harbor School District can provide the safety and security our kids deserve. As a fellow parent and community member, I hope we can show our kids just how important they are by unanimously voting “Yes”!
