To the editor:

I don’t believe that the service and offerings of the Coupeville Library can be improved!

It has been a long time since our family has purchased a new book, or paid rental on a DVD. The vote on Aug. 19 is all about adding space. Libraries meet different needs for different people.

My wife and I drop by the library at least once a week to either pick up or drop off materials. As I stand at the checkout counter I see people using computers, some sitting at the small reading and study area, others roaming the narrow stacks, and a group of children huddled together in their small area for study time. It is obvious to me, by the number of people in the library at any one time, that our experience would be even more enjoyable if we just had a little more personal space. Space must be spelled with a capital S for the staff. I know for a fact that behind those stacks of books on the counters, always dealing with not enough shelves, are people who maintain their smiles and willingness to stop whatever they are doing to answer our question, or to just visit.

I see the vote on Aug. 19 as one of those rare opportunities for us to give our dollars to a project that will benefit the families of Coupeville for years to come. We want to remember that we have brought the need for the library expansion on ourselves. There are reasons why new families “find” the library every day, and those of us with the dog-eared library cards keep coming back.

Please vote YES on Aug. 19 to lower the stacks on the counter and to give us a little more leg room as we stretch out with a good book or magazine.
