LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Great supporters made Hometown Heroes event shine

To the editor:

A very special event took place Aug. 24 at Bayview Community Center. While it looked much like a high school year-book signing party, it was actually a celebration of the publication of the book, Hometown Heroes Volume One.

This book includes many of the stories of heroes of South Whidbey Island that previously were published in The South Whidbey Record. Everyone who worked on this volume is excited about the book and hopes it is the first of several volumes of the stories written by Susan Knickerbocker.

The event would not have happened without the help of the following people:

Island Athletic Club, and owners Debra Valis and Steve Shapiro who sponsored the event; Lynae Slinden at Island Framery; Susan and Rocky Knickerbocker; Jim Freeman, who loaned his impromptu emceeing skills; Vern and Karl Olsen of The Shifty Sailors; and Beverly Graham who provided music and sang for us.

Special thanks also to Patricia Duff of The Record for the article about the event; Sherryl Christie-Biershenk and her company Best Practice, Inc.; Sapphire Embroidery, South Whidbey Commons, Island Coffee & Books, Brian Potter, and committee members Linda and Leonard Good, Natalie Hahn, Betty Eakin and family, Jim Shelver, Sherry and Lilly Mays, and Sue and Dave Haworth.

If you were not able to attend, click here to see photos of the event and for information about how you can get your copy of the book.
