This is an open letter to the Island County commissioners. I was unable to attend the community meeting recently held in Freeland to discuss the proposed law and justice levy, so I don’t know whether the topic of the Juvenile Detention Center was discussed.

I would ask that you inform the taxpayers about how much the Juvenile Detention Center costs to operate, what the average daily census is, and what the cost is per juvenile. This program comes out of the available law and justice dollars in the county, and I believe needs to be scrutinized as part of the whole package. I certainly will want to see these figures before I vote “Yes” on any new law and justice levy.
