LETTER TO THE EDITOR | New non-profit group is born

Wow! The room was brimming over with energy and good will. More than 75 people gathered at Freeland’s St. Augustine’s Church Monday evening to inaugurate a new non-profit organization called Friends of South Whidbey State Park.

Wow! The room was brimming over with energy and good will. More than 75 people gathered at Freeland’s St. Augustine’s Church Monday evening to inaugurate a new non-profit organization called Friends of South Whidbey State Park.

Young and old, longtime Whidbey residents and newcomers listened appreciatively to Peter Herzog, number two in the state’s Parks and Recreation Commission, and Ranger Jon Crimmons, Area Manager for Central Whidbey’s state parks, after gentle serenades by Joanne Rouse and Steve Showell on lute and guitar.

They signed up to become members to help greet and treat visitors from around the country and the world, and enjoyed a quick visual hike and haiku tour of the park’s Wilbert Trail.

My hearty thanks to all who attended, and to the people who worked hard to make this new nonprofit welcome to our spectacular island and its treasures a reality. People who missed the gala may still sign up at FOSWSP@gmail.com
