Editor,
As we return from the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, I am left with a great sense of pride for my students and our very special community here on South Whidbey. Although we did not place in the top three bands within the given scoring matrix, we clearly set the standard for nuanced and soulful performance. As the first performers of the contest, we knew we needed to make a lasting impression, but we never expected such a favorable response.
Throughout the weekend, we received many positive comments from our judges, competing band directors as well as their students. Possibly most telling, was being followed out by one of our judges as well as the festival director to let us know how very special our performance was, especially the fun and enjoyment we bring to our music. We were immediately recognized for raising the bar from the start.
Our “cups” are truly full, as we return from this wonderful experience. We witnessed such incredible musicianship by fellow students and clinicians. We made new friends, and celebrated our accomplishments as we toured the beautiful Central California coast. We felt the support of our community every step of the way, and will forever be grateful for all the contributions by our friends, families and community members in our hamlet on Whidbey Island.
I could not be more proud of these students, as it is such sweet pleasure to witness their hard work; dedication, perseverance, and tenacity pay off. They were not only confident, they were bold. They demonstrated “class” at every step, and truly represented the incredible quality of their community.
Here again is just one more testament to the power of community. Everyone deserves a piece of the credit for this wonderful moment, as we all set our hearts, minds and resources to make this happen.
I want to specifically thank our South Whidbey School District for their consistent support of the arts, as well as the business community and individual donors who helped open doors for us along the way with their generous donations.
Most of all, I want to thank my students for Such Sweet Thunder!
