Editor,
Downtown Clinton is a small, community-supporting business center.
When I exit the ferry I have a first destination in mind, like home or the vacation rental or a friend’s house. Rarely am I headed to get my nails done, stop at the bank or rent a U-Haul.
There are really no impulse stops as we race off the ferry. There are places to come back to and visit, do business or shop.
So why put a roundabout on Highway 525 at Deer Lake Road to slow down the traffic? Yikes! Please ’splain to me how that will make it easier for local traffic on a hot — or even stormy — Sunday afternoon with a long, impatient line of ferry traffic waiting and a bottleneck for traffic leaving the ferry. I think I would want to get out of Clinton as fast as possible.
So, to offer an opinion on my question, I challenge those pushing to spend tons of money on making me slow down to discover how to make people want to stop in Clinton.
Here are a couple of ideas. Let’s feature our assets, such as softball tournaments at Porter field or a fishing derby on Deer Lake. Create an identity for something unique like art or food or gardens or textile arts or the world’s largest pickle. You know, a reason to go to Clinton.
Thanks,
JEFF HADLOCK
