Letter: Write-in campaign is not legitimate

Editor,

Regarding the Sept. 11 article about Damian Greene’s write-in campaign: Damian is a minor player with the Island County Republicans, ICRP. He was on the South Whidbey School Board, but in 2021 when his three friends didn’t get elected to the board, Damian quit because he said the board was “too political.”

That’s rich, considering he previously ran and lost for county commissioner, and he applied but failed to be appointed to fill a state senate seat.

Unlike the four candidates who filed to run in this election (two Dems and two Republicans), Damian hasn’t put in the work of campaigning, of going door to door, of attending public forums. Instead, he wants to sweep in at the last minute like a vulture feasting on the carrion left by others.

That’s called being entitled and underhanded, not running a legitimate campaign.

His plan? He hopes to get write-in votes from people who voted for Steve Myres or Wanda Grone and that these will be enough to beat the two women who are legitimately running.

Speaking of underhanded: On Sept. 18, I got an unsolicited email from the ICRP, saying, “Democrats want a fight. We will split their vote if we write in Damian Greene.”

No one wants a “fight” here except the ICRP. The rest of us want to hold elections to select leaders who will represent all of us. That’s a concept Damian Greene and the ICRP continually fail to understand.
