Editor,
I am writing in response to Mr. Jim Ester’s Mar. 23 letter, “Biden isn’t doing enough for Ukraine.”
Mr. Ester starts by saying he’s “saddened” by events in Ukraine, but he then expresses his sadness by offering up a hate-list from Fox News Fantasy Camp: the border, Iraq, China, inflation, etc. I’m surprised he didn’t mention “cancel culture” (Putin’s latest obsession), or Critical Race Theory (Trump’s).
Setting aside Mr. Ester’s political fantasies, what President Biden has done is create a coalition of nations who are showing a united front against Putin and his illegal and immoral war. What Mr. Ester rather foolishly doesn’t understand is that this is a very complicated situation, made more so by Putin’s threat to use nuclear and chemical weapons, and the very really threat that this could easily becoming a global conflict.
And this situation is made worse – not better – by Mr. Ester’s fake-concern and his failure to support our president and our nation when it is most needed.
This makes me wonder, however, what does Mr. Ester think we should do to end this conflict? Does he think we should all file frivolous lawsuits as our former president just did? Or should we follow Trump’s suggestion and paint our jets to look like China’s and then bomb Russia? Or maybe Mr. Ester would have us buy more Russian oil as a way of showing our concern?
For any of the rest of us who are really concerned about Ukraine, I suggest two organizations you can support and donate to (among others) who have long track records of working in war zones: Doctors without Borders and the International Rescue Committee.
Who knows, perhaps as a symbolic gesture to the Russian oil he doesn’t get to put in his tank, Mr. Ester will donate 10% of his income to one of these fine organizations.
