South Whidbey State Park will be abuzz with activity Thursday, Friday and Sunday beyond the normal visitors and woodland wanderers with a music performance, a lesson about Southern resident orcas and a movie about Whidbey’s birds.

Listen to acoustic guitarist Quinn Fitzpatrick in the outdoor amphitheater at South Whidbey State Park from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Bring a picnic dinner to enjoy while hearing Quinn, a Whidbey resident, cover a wide spectrum of emotions and styles.

Learn about Whidbey Island’s local killer whale population at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 from Howard Garrett of the Orca Network in the outdoor amphitheater during his presentation, “At Home with Southern Resident Orcas.”

Join husband-and-wife Craig and Joy Johnson at South Whidbey State Park’s amphitheater as they present an update to their movie, “Birds, Backyard Habitat and Beyond,” at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31.

Watercolor artist and photographer Craig Johnson and writer Joy Johnson created and published four books containing colorful, close-up photographs of Pacific Northwest birds, most found in the Puget Sound area.

Together, the Johnsons study ornithology and have spent countless hours observing and photographing birds in the field.

Connecting people to birds using art is the Johnsons’ focus. Through narration, videos, photos, drawings and animations, the Johnsons will take viewers on a guided tour, exploring the wonders of birds found on Whidbey Island.

There is no charge, but a Discover Pass is required for all vehicles that enter the park. South Whidbey State Park is located at 4128 S. Smuggler’s Cove, Freeland, WA 98249.
