Tickets are now on sale for the Whidbey Children’s Theater production of Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty Kids,” which opens Oct. 19 and closes Oct. 28.
Whidbey Children’s Theater Artistic Director Rose Woods will also direct this production.
“It’s no secret that I love fairy tales, and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is one that has always sparked my imagination. I thought it would be a perfect choice to awaken our season of magic and enchantment and I haven’t been disappointed,” Woods said in a press release.
In “Sleeping Beauty,” it’s princess Aurora’s 16th birthday, and Flora, Fauna and Merryweather must use their fairy magic to save her from the spell of evil sorceress Maleficent. This beloved fairy tale, based upon the classic 1959 Disney animated film, features the familiar characters and songs from the movie.
“I love all the characters,” Woods said. “Especially the three fairies, and Aurora’s animal friends. And Maleficent remains one of the best villains of any story.”
Songs including “Once Upon a Dream” are joined by clever new songs like “Maleficent!” and “A Little Magic Now” to add a fresh story element for a new generation of families.
“The music, adapted from Tchaikovsky by George Bruns, is evocative and lush,” Woods added.
As is the mission and philosophy of Whidbey Children’s Theater, the spotlight shines on the kids.
“The children, whose ages range from 6 to 10, have loved every part of this rehearsal process and are getting into their characters with enthusiasm,” Woods said. “My production crew range in age from 12 to 16 and are incredible. I am constantly amazed at how wonderfully talented they all are.”
Coming up Dec. 7 through 22 is “Willy Wonka,” a production by middle school-aged students that will be directed by Ken Martinez.
