An Oak Harbor nonprofit is providing all kinds of items needed for the holiday season.
Last Wednesday, the Garage of Blessings handed out brand new hats, gloves, scarves, socks, sweatpants and underwear – much needed clothing for this time of year.
North Whidbey Middle School students sold $167 worth of hot chocolate and used the money to purchase the items.
Jane Brent, Garage of Blessings volunteer, had a friend who contributed an additional $1,000 worth of brand new winter gear such as coats and sleeping bags. Brent also put together goodie bags for children filled with snacks.
On a normal day, Garage of Blessings shoppers can fill one shopping bag with used items that are donated to the nonprofit. This is the first year Garage of Blessings has done an event like this.
“This way I can hand it out individually and help more people,” Brent said.
The Garage of Blessings is hosting an annual children’s gift-giving event next week. Kids can choose two gifts for their parents or other people in their lives. The children can select anything from the boutique area at no cost while mom and dad are shopping in the other part of the store. Volunteers help the kids pick out their items and then wrap the presents for them.
“It is a cute thing to watch those kids pick out those gifts,” said Patty Folkestad, the administrative director at Garage of Blessings. “There’s a lot of tissue moments.”
The event is from 12:30-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13. People can sign up in person at the Garage until Dec. 12.
Anyone is welcome to visit the Garage of Blessings during normal business hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
