The Langley Library is looking good.

The Friends of the Langley Library and library staff are so happy with Langley Library’s new facelift that they want to share it with the community.

An open house celebration and membership party will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at the library on Second Street.

Library manager Vicky Welfare said she and her staff are thrilled with the changes to the library.

“The library entryway is more open and welcoming, and the new paint and carpet have brought new life to the library,” Welfare said.

Friends of the Langley Library president Pam Owen thinks the library’s new look will attract newcomers.

“Walking through the entry way at the recently refreshed Langley Library is like entering a meadow,” Owen said.

“There’s no longer the wood barrier to block the pathway. You enter straight away into the heart,” she said, “and then there is the cheery yellow paint in the children’s area which gives you the idea of the sun rising on that side of the building. With a view of the water out the windows, you don’t know whether to look at books or have a picnic! How fun is that?”

Welfare said the updated furnishings are more user-friendly and take up less space to allow more freedom to move around.

Also, an updated bookdrop is now more ergonomically friendly and staff no longer have to pick returned books up off the floor.

“The new private office space is not quite finished, but we are greatly looking forward to finally having a space where staff can meet privately, take a confidential call, etc.,” Welfare added.

Welfare is also looking forward to the festivities, which will include music, chocolates and wine, and everyone is welcome. Members of the Friends, donors and library volunteers will receive special recognition for their ongoing support.

During the event, a new stained-glass window created by local artists Calli and David Beers will be dedicated to Jacqueline D. Bundy, whose unexpected bequest to the Friends of the Langley Library for $65,000 made the interior renovations and enhancements possible.

“Jacqueline Bundy was a sweet, unassuming lady who came to the library every week,” Welfare said.

“She always copied the New York Times crossword puzzle without fail. I remember her as being very pleasant,” she added.

“From what I understand, she was a very generous woman who left her estate to various agencies and charities who could benefit. Obviously she loved her library very much and we greatly appreciate her generosity,” Welfare said.

Welfare noted that the Langley Library has been assigned the Sno-Isle service model of a Lifelong Learning facility, which means that it provides core library services, with a special emphasis toward serving the adult patron.

“In our newly updated facility we look forward to a future of more effectively serving the wonderful folks in the Langley community,” she said.
