Take your “Cheatin’ Heart” over there, “On The Sunny Side of the Street,” and dance like there’s “Witchcraft” in your blood.

The strains of those classic big band songs will float on the wind in Bayview as sweethearts entwine and tangle to celebrate Valentine’s Day at the annual “Sweetheart Ball” at Bayview Community Hall on Saturday, Feb. 12.

Now in its third year, the Sweetheart Ball features a pre-dance workshop with professional dance guru Walter Dill, with the help of his daughters Twyla and Celina, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Live music with Whidbey Island’s dance band LocoMotion for all dance styles will continue into the evening until 10:30 p.m. Dill’s workshop will guide dancers through variations of the waltz customized for all levels of participants.

Musical selections for the Sweetheart Ball include a variety of the old and the new, with the one requirement that they be definitely danceable. Big band songs on the program also include “Undecided,” “I’m Beginning to See the Light,” “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” “Route 66,” “C’est Si Bon,” “Lazy River,” “Let’s Fall in Love,” “In the Mood,” “That Old Black Magic,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Blue Skies,” and “Save the Last Dance.”

Also on the program to inspire dancers will be the Hank Williams’ favorites, “Jambalaya,” “Hey, Good Lookin’,” and several Louis Jordan-style pieces such as “Jump, Jive and Wail,” in addition to some classic blues and rock ’n’ roll tunes, with large variety of waltzes gliding in for good measure.

Semi-formal attire is encouraged so gents, don your finest duds and gals, slink into that little red dress because it’s time to kick up the heels.

Tickets cost $15 per person at the door. All proceeds from the event benefit Bayview Community Hall and its efforts to remain available to South Whidbey residents as a unique community resource.
