Oak Harbor High School student Kiersten Tyson was crowned Miss Oak Harbor 2023 this month, according to a press release from the Miss Oak Harbor nonprofit organization.
The 2023 Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant, sponsored by Thrive Community Fitness, took place Mar. 18 at Oak Harbor High School.
Fifteen contestants embarked on a six-week journey to gain valuable coaching in many life skills, numerous networking opportunities, new friendships, powerful mentoring and thousands of dollars in college scholarships. In total, $19,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded.
“We’re so grateful to our judges who took on the very difficult job of scoring contestants in the areas of personal interview, speech/talent, formal wear, and stage presence,” Pageant Director River Powers said. Participants were also scored in academics, service, extra-curricular activities, work, marketing, health and wellness, style and self-expression, physical fitness, attendance and board of directors input.
Tyson, along with her Miss Oak Harbor crown, received the additional title of Miss Fitness. Cali Pretti and Jordan Garstin were her first and second runners-up, respectively, and Pretti was also awarded the title of Miss Scholar.
Laurianna Newcomb became Teen Miss Oak Harbor 2023, with first and second runners-up going to Elizabeth Hauter and Danielle Becherer. Newcomb also won the title of Teen Miss Scholar.
Lauryn Lopez won the people’s choice award, Jaycee Ray was awarded the Miss Congeniality title, and Abby Brinker was named Miss Service.
Since 2015, the Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant has awarded over $113,000 in scholarships and awards. It is produced by Miss Oak Harbor, a nonprofit whose mission is to inspire, challenge and mentor contestants while providing opportunities for them to develop life skills that will enhance their confidence, self-esteem, and sense of accomplishment. The unique six-week high school program focuses on personal and professional growth through the development of leadership, communication, and marketability.
