In an all-day, outdoor event at the Pavilion at Windjammer Park on June 22, a total of 44 contestants competed for sashes and crowns as they vied for age-group titles.
The Pioneer Way Pageant for girls and boys ages up to 14 years old was produced by the 2023 Mr. Oak Harbor and 2024 Miss Oak Harbor Courts. It is the primary fundraiser for their service projects (advocating for an Oak Harbor community recreational center and North Whidbey Hearts & Hammers). The event was sponsored by Whidbey Royalty and Oak Harbor Main Street.
Spending time on Pioneer Way in the last year qualified contestants to participate. Each age-group pageant throughout the day included coaching by Miss and Mr. Oak Harbor Royalty in stage presence, impromptu questions and a dance to “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” The five-judge panel scored contestants on stage presence and effort.
“This pageant is a fun, one-day event that provides an opportunity for aspiring princesses and princes to be mentored by high school royalty. They compete for the opportunity to be crowned royalty themselves and ride in the 4th of July parade with their mentors,” Pageant Director River Powers said.
The top two contestants in each division were crowned Queen/King and Princess/Prince and will ride on the float with Miss and Mr. Oak Harbor Royalty in the Oak Harbor 4th of July parade.
