San Juan Island indie-folk duo coming to WICA

Mandy Fer and Dave McGraw, known as Sway Wild, chose Whidbey as the launch pad for their 2022 tour.

A self-described musical “power duo” hailing from another island nearby is choosing Whidbey as the launch pad for their 2022 tour.

Indie-folk couple Mandy Fer and Dave McGraw, performing together as Sway Wild, will take the stage at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. this Wednesday, April 6.

The partners in music and all other things in life have spent the last decade living on San Juan Island and have been performing together for nearly 12 years. Over the years they’ve collaborated with artists such as Iron & Wine, Gregory Alan Isakov and Mandolin Orange, traveling internationally from Alaska to Amsterdam.

Most recently, Fer was invited to play guitar in an all-female music project led by Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Russell. This resulted in performances on TV shows “Jimmy Kimmel” and “Ellen.” This weekend, she will be playing at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

Now, Fer is returning to her roots and focusing on playing with McGraw again as Sway Wild. One of the pair’s last shows before the COVID-19 pandemic’s lockdown in 2020 was at WICA. Fittingly, it is where they will return to play their first show of their new tour, which currently has 11 legs that takes them through the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, the Midwest and the West Coast.

“Whidbey is kind of like a home away from home for us,” Fer said.

In the past, she and McGraw have played at the Oak Harbor Music Festival and Central Whidbey’s Into the Woods Music Festival.

“Every time we drive down Whidbey, we’re like, ‘Man, this island is huge,’” Fer said with a laugh.

She plays electric guitar and sings, he alternates between a drum set and acoustic guitar and also sings.

Fer said she is excited to debut some new tunes, which include new single “Highway 89,” a love song to the Arizona desert where she and McGraw first met.

“Just being able to be in a room with people and share music feels like a gift that we will just never take for granted again,” Fer said.
