There are events happening all across Whidbey Island this week to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Longtime Whidbey resident Jim Patton, a retired Navy captain, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program at Oak Harbor High School. The program will take place from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 11 in the auditorium. The program will also feature Navy Band Northwest, Oak Harbor High School’s choir and band, and Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps. It is open to the public free of charge.

At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, a Veterans Day remembrance ceremony will be held on the Veterans Plaza at the Island County courthouse located at Northeast Sixth Street in Coupeville. The ceremony will feature the presentation of flags of each branch of military service and the POW-MIA flag. Coupeville Mayor Molly Hughes will give a history of each branch of service and the Shifty Sailors will sing the anthem of each branch.

Before the ceremony at 10 a.m., members of the Central Whidbey Lions Club will be handing out small flags with tags to have veterans and their family members place at the plaza. There is no cost for the flags and they will be left on display through the weekend.

The Buck Francisco Marine Corps League will have a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at Bayview Cemetery in Langley. It will be a short ceremony with a rifle volley and bugle.

On Saturday, the league will collect donation money at Payless Foods in Freeland for scholarships and general expenses. On Sunday, the league will collect money for Toys for Tots, specifically for children on South Whidbey.
