Whidbey Audubon Society hosts a habitat walk through Deer Lagoon on Saturday, May 18, to learn about wetlands.

Dyanne Sheldon, veteran field researcher, will lead this examination of the microhabitats within the overall wetland area. Deer Lagoon has an high overall species diversity, including birds. Participants will look at the freshwater and saltwater habitats and talk about the various habitat and other functions these wetland types perform and about how water, soil, vegetation, tides, bluffs and forests influence and are influenced by the habitats of Deer Lagoon.

If there is enough time the walk will continue out to the high-energy cobble shore to look at how the functions are different.

The walk is free and the public is welcome; binoculars would be useful. Meet at 9 a.m. at Bayview park and ride on Highway 525 and Bayview Road to carpool. Contact Sheldon at dyanne@whidbey.com.
