New WhidbeyHealth oncology team provides cancer care, close to home

Cancer treatment transitions from Everett providers to full-time local care

Patients undergoing cancer treatment on Whidbey Island will soon have full-time care based right here on the Island.

Currently, oncology care is provided by a team from The Everett Clinic, with physicians rotating through to see patients at WhidbeyHealth Medical Center, explains Brandy Butler from WhidbeyHealth.

When the hospital was informed that the Everett team would no longer be providing care by the end of August, WhidbeyHealth found opportunity in the transition.

“It’s a service we’re really committed to and we don’t want people to have to travel for their care,” Butler says, noting that this summer – for the first time – a new hematology/oncology physician and nurse practitioner specializing in cancer care will ensure Whidbey patients continue enjoying local, full-time care, close to home.

At the heart of that commitment is a new resident oncologist Dr. Deepjot Singh, working with Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner Lena Bransom, both practicing out of WhidbeyHealth Medical Center.

When Dr. Singh joins WhidbeyHealth in August, he’ll bring with him more than 20 years of hematology/oncology experience, most recently as the Medical Director of the Cancer and Blood Center at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital in Spokane.

Holding three board certifications – Medical Oncology, Hematology and Internal Medicine – he also serves on the board of the Washington State Medical Oncology Society and as a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Before becoming a nurse practitioner, Bransom worked as a dedicated and compassionate RN for 16 years, beginning her journey at WhidbeyHealth Cancer Care as an experienced Oncology Certified RN in 2019.

She is passionate about helping people and providing exceptional care during a time that is often a most difficult journey.

As WhidbeyHealth continues investing in comprehensive care for Island residents, “it really is an exciting time of growth,” Butler says.
