Whether your automotive passions lean to custom or restored muscle cars, vintage rods or sports cars, chances are you’ll see a few favourites on Whidbey Island roads this summer!
On Aug. 3, as many as 150 of those head-turning vehicles will be assembled at the Fairgrounds in Langley, for a free admission show that benefits local charities.
Bruce Bell and partner Heather Klein, who have been involved with cars most of their lives, organized the first-ever Whidbey Island Car Show as a way to recognize the organizations and people who do so much to support their neighbours.
“We live in a good community that has done a lot for a lot of people,” Klein says. “This event is one way we could give back to some of those groups that have served many of us so well over the years.”
The Friends of Friends mobile medical supports program, The HUB Youth Center and Whidbey Veterans Resource Center are on the list of beneficiaries.
Here’s how you can get involved in this inaugural show and shine!
- Show off your pride and joy: If you’ve got a vehicle you’re proud of, no matter when it was built or how much work you’ve put into it, the Whidbey Island Car Show is a great chance to share your passion with the public. Numerous categories include antiques, classic muscle cars, modern cars, trucks or sports cars, Japanese and European imports and more. Entry is $40 per car, with all proceeds going to charity.
- Vote for your favorites: Not only will drivers in each category be judged by a 10-person panel, special awards for Best of Show, Under Construction, Exotic, Special Interest and Judge’s Choice will be presented. And of course, attendees can vote on their favorites for the People’s Choice Award.
- Work up an appetite: The Fairgrounds’ own Scallywagon Eatery will be on site providing breakfast for show entrants, as well as yummy lunch, dessert and beverage options for spectators and car owners alike.
- Watch for the ‘Conductor of Fun’: When Bell and Klein considered who might make the best MC for the day, they quickly decided on Jim Freeman. Referring to the retired lawyer as the “Conductor of Fun,” a man who brings energy to events all over the Island, Bell says Freeman will help bring a carnival feel to the proceedings.
