A Coupeville man is accused of causing a collision with a motorcyclist and driving away without stopping.

The incident happened two years ago, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged Randy L. Thiesfeld, 54, in Island County Superior Court Sept. 4 with hit and run. He could face up to 14 months in prison if convicted of the charge.

Detective Charles Sletten with the Washington State Patrol investigated the collision near Coupeville on Sept. 7, 2011.

Sletten’s report states that Gary Kelly was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle south on Engle Road when Thiesfeld, who was driving a Jeep Cherokee, failed to yield the right-of-way and turned in front of the motorcycle.

The motorcycle struck the rear of the Jeep. Kelly suffered a broken bone in his foot in the crash.

Thiesfeld didn’t stop after the collision and drove home, the report states. Deputies were able to identify Thiesfeld from a description of the Jeep and found him at his home.

Thiesfeld said he was driving home from fishing and didn’t realize that he had been struck.

He admitted drinking a small amount of beer prior to the accident, but drank more when he got home. A blood test showed that he was intoxicated two hours and forty minutes after the collision, according to the report.

The filing of a charge against Thiesfeld was delayed due to civil litigation between the two parties, according to the Island County Prosecutor’s Office.
