50 YEARS AGO TODAY

The following are excerpts of stories in the Oct. 15, 1964, edition of the Whidbey Island Record, now the South Whidbey Record.

School district buys desks for 7th, 8th grade rooms

“South Whidbey school board directors Monday night purchased 120 new desk-chair sets for seventh and eighth grade classrooms, choosing one of 24 models submitted by bid by seven competing companies. “Prior to making the purchase from B.F. Sherarer company of Seattle, the directors spent nearly two hours hearing the merits of various desks extolled by company representatives.

“The new desks have a chrome frame, a molded one-piece plastic top, 18 inches by 24 inches, plastic seats and a frame book rack. Max Maresko, sales representative for the company, pointed out that his desk combined durability with beauty. Maresko, who weighs over 250 pounds, demonstrated the desk’s strength by sitting on it, bouncing on the table top and standing on the book rack.”

Fair board reviews bids and sets ‘65 objectives
“Island County’s Fair Board reviewed its recent painting bids and set up its goals for 1965 when it met Monday night at the fair office in Langley.

“Review of the painting bids was called for by Ted Meinhold, one of the bidders. The board, in a special meeting recently, awarded a contract for painting the fair buildings to Rank Mauk of Greenbank. The bid total was $1,970 and included painting of the office, restroom, main auditorium log building, commercial building, home economics building, Malone building and the 4-H stock barn.

“…Board members, as they do about this time every year, set up objectives for the next year. The program for 1965 calls for construction of another horse barn to go with the one completed this year. Estimated cost for materials was $3,000.

“The board would also like to see restrooms and showers constructed, at an estimated cost of $1,500, renovate the 4-H and home economics building at a cost of $1,100 and bring the lighting system up to code at a cost of $2,000.”

Scotty’s Service hit by burglar

“A thief broke into Scotty’s Service at Freeland sometime during the early morning hours Saturday and made off with about $15 in change left in the cash register.

“Two panes of glass in the back window of the lube room were broken to gain entry into the service station. The burglar had to the crawl in over shelves full of tools and materials, scattering them across the floor in the process.”

Theatre returns to old schedule

“Angus Whyte, new manager of the Clyde Theatre in Langley, this week announced that he is canceling Monday and Wednesday evening shows until further notice.

“The decision to go to a one-show-a-week schedule came after only a few customers showed up for Sunday evening’s feature and even fewer showed up Wednesday night of this week.”
