Two aircrew safety ejected from a Navy EA-18G Growler before it crashed into San Diego Bay this morning, according to a press release from the Navy.
The Growler was assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 135, the “Black Ravens,” an expeditionary squadron that is based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
Two aircrew ejected into San Diego Bay and were recovered at 10:28 a.m. by the U.S. Coast Guard, according to the Navy. The aircrew were transported to a local hospital for medical assessment and are reported to be in stable condition.
Military.com reported that the jet crashed in the water off Naval Air Station North Island. A video of the area following the crash on social media showed Navy boats setting up devices meant to contain oil spills.
Naval Base Coronado has stood up an Emergency Operations Center in response to the mishap, and an assessment of the crash site is ongoing.
The Navy reported that the cause of the crash is under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.
The incident is the second Growler crash in four months. On Oct. 15, two crew members were killed when their aircraft crashed near Mount Rainier. The cause of that accident is also under investigation.
