The 75th anniversary of the building of the Deception Pass Bridge will be celebrated today with a ribbon cutting, a flyover by Navy jets, special guests, food and music.

The event, sponsored by the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, will begin at 11 a.m. at Deception Pass State Park.

The bridge will close at 12:27 p.m. for three minutes for a procession of vintage pre-1935 cars, the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the flyover by Whidbey-based EA-18G and EA-6B jets.

Meanwhile, festivities at Cranberry Lake will include food, vendors, live music and special events for children. At 7 p.m. there will be an American Roots Music Series performance presented by the State Parks Folk and Traditional Arts in the Parks Program.

Parking will be limited, but a free shuttle bus will run throughout the day. Bus service through Island Transit also will be available.

Seattle-based Puget Construction Co. built the bridge in 1935. Unofficial tallies taken the two Sundays after the bridge opened showed 3,000 to 5,000 vehicles crossed the bridge daily. Today, 15,000 vehicles cross daily, and the nearby state park receives 2 million visitors a year.

Because of the celebration, travelers through Deception Pass should be prepared for traffic delays on Highway 20 between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
