More than 500 Freeland area residents were left without power Sunday evening after a transformer went up in flames.

The outage occurred at 8:53 p.m., according to Puget Sound Energy spokesman Akiko Oda, and impacted 571 of the company’s customers.

“The outage was caused by equipment failure including a blown underground fuse, which was most likely the loud noise you heard,” Oda said.

Puget Sound Energy was able to restore energy to 479 customers while repair crews worked on the damage throughout the night. The remaining 92 customers had power restored at 7:37 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, Oda said.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jason Laughren said the fire caused by the blown fuse was approximately 10-by-20 feet. The damaged transformer is located on the corner of Honeymoon Bay Road and Harbor Hills Road.

“We normally don’t deal with power outages, but the transformer blew and we ended up with a small fire out of it,” Laughren said.
