A man was arrested Thursday morning for making a bomb scare that suspended service on the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry route.

At approximately 9 a.m. a man on the MV Cathlamet from Clinton left a backpack on the car deck of the 144-car ferry. Passengers overheard him making statements that left them fearful there was a bomb in the backpack, said Trooper Keith Leary, spokesman for the Washington State Patrol.

When the ferry arrived at the Mukilteo terminal, the State Patrol’s bomb squad examined and x-rayed the pack and eventually determined there was no explosives in the backpack, Leary said. Bomb detection dogs from the Washington State Patrol searched the ferry and terminals for any additional devices.

Troopers arrested one man in connection with the morning incident. Leary said he didn’t have any details yet about the man, what he said that alarmed passengers, or what charges he would face. The State Patrol’s criminal investigations unit will head up the investigation.

The bomb scare canceled service on the busy ferry route.

Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Marta Coursey said that ride-on passengers were also evacuated from the Kittitas when it was docked at the Clinton ferry dock. It then sailed to Edmonds to unload vehicles. With the State Patrol finished with the search, Coursey hopes service on the route can resume with the 11 a.m. sailing from Mukilteo and 11:30 a.m. from Clinton.
