Book is dog and cat lovers’ dining friend

Is Rover getting a little tired of the same old kibble day-after-day? If that meatloaf is finally turning into a mystery — even to the humans in your house, you might want to grab “Culinary Tails: Recipes and Whimsy from Whidbey Island,” which is now on sale.

All proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will benefit FETCH! (Free Exercise Time for Canines and Their Humans), which promotes off-leash dog parks on Whidbey and WAIF (Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation), which manages the minimal-kill animal shelter in Coupeville.

“Culinary Tails” has recipes for every meal, in appropriately animal-themed sections. “The Morning Stretch” includes waffles, muffins and other treats for breakfast or brunch. “Cat Nips” include appetizers of dips, crab cakes and mussels. “Trusted Companions” are a variety of soups, sides and salads that feature Northwest favorites along with Southwest and Thai recipes.

“Sit! Stay! Dig In!” has entrees of chicken, chili, seafood, and even goulash. WAIF shelter managing cat Willie would be happy to hear of the “Happy Endings” desserts. And thanks to this packed cookbook, “Beggars Can Be Choosers” with a yummy sampling of treat recipes fit for even the most finicky fido or fluffy.

And even if not labeled as a pet treat, some of the treats are just too good not to be shared with the pets.

“They’re Duncan’s favorite dog bone,” said recipe contributor Susie Yeilding of the “Duncan’s Delights” she makes for her cocker spaniel.

Duncan, the company mascot for Whidbey Financial Services, has a sweet tooth for the frozen delights that contain banana, peanut butter, wheat germ and peanuts.

The cookbook premiered at Wag ‘n’ Walk Sept. 14, and is now available at a number of local merchants.

Along with useful cooking tips and conversions, wine notes provided by Vino Amore’s Gail Liston accompany many of the recipes.

Pictures and pet stories shared by the people of Whidbey complete this book dedicated to and benefitting four-legged friends, as well as fun facts about Whidbey animal support groups.
