Wind and wet didn’t stop a few South Whidbey golfers from making a good impression on their coach and competitors Thursday.

Hitting the links shortly after a downpour soaked the greens and fareways at the Useless Bay Golf and Country Club, the Falcon boys golf team went after par on a day that was definitely sub-par for almost anyone not wearing royal blue. In a four-way meet against North Cascade Conference visitors Blaine, Lakewood and Meridian, the South Whidbey boys hit a team low of 206 behind several solid opening-day performances. The Falcons won the meet, finishing well ahead of Meridian at 231, Blaine at 234 and Lakewood at 242.

Leading on the course was junior Jeff Strong, who cruised over the course by shooting 37 for nine holes. Par for Useless Bay for those holes is 35. The score made strong the co-medalist with Meridian freshman Evan Needham, whose tying score was one of just three under 40 that day.

The other sub-forty tally went to junior Falcon Reed Dettrich. His 38 gave him a third-place finish.

Also solid on the course was senior Bryan Wilson with a 41.

Falcon coach Mick Heggenes said he was happy to get the early victory and to see his golfers under 40 strokes.

“I’m pleased to have a couple kids at two or three over,” he said.

The meet followed a jamboree last week at Holmes Harbor Golf Course. The boys go on the road next Monday to compete in Snohomish.
