Island County’s total burn ban was downgraded to a modified ban Wednesday, according to Sheriff Mark Brown.
The downgrade was made because of increased moisture levels and more available fire-fighting resources, the Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement.
Under a modified burn ban, recreational fires using charcoal or wood may be made in enclosures that are at least 16 inches high, no larger than three feet across and made of cement block, stones or number 10 gauge steel.
Burning materials must remain below the enclosure’s sidewalls.
Two five-gallon buckets of water, or a five-gallon Class A fire extinguisher, or a charged garden hose must be kept in the immediate vicinity of any fire at all times, the Sheriff’s Office said.
