It may sound unusual but perhaps not for Whidbey Island.
Whidbey Island Cannabis Company is collecting coats and bedding for the Whidbey Homeless Coalition and offering a 10 percent discount for customers who contribute.
“We are happy to be able to support this very special organization and to encourage and help facilitate others to help,” said Kathy McCoy, manager of Whidbey Island Cannabis Company, located in Freeland.
“We wanted to do something for the community and we have a lot of need among the homeless population.”
Whidbey Homeless Coalition manages an emergency overnight shelter in Oak Harbor and Hope House in Langley for individuals and families in need of temporary housing.
It also sublets five rental units for those having difficulty finding housing, makes connections with social services and provides one-on-one support to people in transition.
Cannabis customers who contribute to the effort get 10 percent off purchases, McCoy said. The store is located at the corner of Highway 525 and Scott Road.
People have responded generously so far, said budtender Megan Sinclair. Coats and bedding, particularly single bed blankets, are needed.
The items can be new or “gently worn;” the collection continues through Jan. 31.
Some of the donations may be distributed during the annual Point in Time count on Jan. 24, said Judy Thorsland, founding member and volunteer with the homeless organization.
“It’s a perfect time to distribute warm clothing to those who need it,” Thorsland said.
