Police are looking around Whidbey Island for a car that once belonged to Gary Ridgway, who has been charged with four of the murders in the notorious Green River Killer string of murders.
Being sought is a 1969 Dodge Dart, color tan over brown. According to the King County Sheriff’s Office, the car was previously owned by Ridgway and was last registered in 1992.
“It’s probably abandoned in someone’s yard,” said King County Detective Katie Larson on Thursday. “But it’s a valuable piece of evidence.”
There is no certainty the car is on Whidbey Island. Larson said the person who owned the Dodge Dart until 1992 reportedly sold the car to three Hispanic males who “lived on one of the islands.” Whidbey was mentioned as the first of three possible locations, which included Camano and Orcas islands. Because Whidbey was first remembered, police think this is the car’s most likely location.
“It is important to the investigation that we locate this vehicle,” the King County Sheriff stated in a bulletin.
Police are looking for all of Ridgway’s former cars in hopes of finding evidence inside.
During the period of the Green River killings, which lasted from 1982 to 1984, 49 women were either killed or disappeared. Several of their bodies were found in and around the Green River.
Ridgway, 53, has been charged with four counts of aggravated first degree murder. All four slayings have been attributed to the Green River killer.
Anyone with information about the car can call the Green River Task Force, Detective Tony McNabb, 206-205-3424 or 206-423-4451, or any police or sheriff’s office.
