The men accused of vandalizing St. Hubert Catholic Church and breaking into the Braeburn Restaurant last week were charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, court officials said.

Sean McLaughlin, 26, and Craig Firth, 19, were caught allegedly redhanded during a late night crime spree in Langley Thursday morning.

The men broke into the Braeburn on Second Street and stole wine. From there, they moved on to the Catholic church on Third Street that’s just a few minutes walking distance away. At the church, they trashed the inside of the building in what police called a drunken rage.

After breaking into the church, the pair allegedly made their way through the church’s newly-remodeled main building and also broke into some adjacent classrooms in their whirlwind of destruction.

They broke windows, smashed wine bottles stolen from the Braeburn and threw other objects against the walls. They also kicked walls and doors, tipped over chairs and the organ in the chapel, and smashed the large bowl that held holy water.

They were stopped by Langley Police Officer Randy Heston and Island County Sheriff’s office deputy Scott Davis who caught them after a tip from a neighbor alerted them to the break-in at the church.

Herzberg said the suspects were visibly intoxicated and possibly on drugs.

McLaughlin and Firth were arrested and booked into Island County Jail.

According to the Island County Prosecutor’s Office, Firth and McLaughlin are being held on $25,000 bail.

Court officials said McLaughlin and Firth are due back in court for their arraignment on May 19.
