No was injured in a brush fire Wednesday afternoon near Clinton.

Firefighters responded to the blaze on Campbell Road between Highway 525 and Cultus Bay Road at 12:56 p.m. on July 17, according to South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

Assistant Chief Terry Ney said the flames were contained to a 100-foot-by-30-foot area of low grass. Firefighters worked quickly to get the fire under control within five minutes, successfully keeping it from reaching scotch broom and fir trees about 20 feet downwind.

South Whidbey Fire/EMS responded with an engine, a brush truck, two aid vehicles, a command unit and eight personnel.

Ney said the cause appeared to be a discarded cigarette.

State officials have warned of the increased potential for wildfires due to dry weather this summer, but so far Whidbey Island hasn’t seen a surge in outdoor fires this year.
