Police are following leads after the second break-in in a week at the Clinton library.

“We believe it’s likely they are connected,” Detective Ed Wallace of the Island County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

The latest break-in occurred during the night of Wednesday, Feb. 23 and Thursday, Feb. 24, Wallace said. Someone used a tool to remove a screen and break a side window to gain entry, he said.

Wallace said nothing appeared to be missing from the library, and no internal damage was evident. He said damage to the screen and window was estimated at about $430.

On the night of Feb. 18-19, someone broke into the library on Deer Lake Road and stole a small amount of cash from a drawer and a printer vending machine, and movie DVDs.

Entry was gained by forcing the rear door. Damage was estimated at about $90, mostly for repair of the door, Wallace said.

He said footprints were found after the latest break-in, and that fingerprints and other evidence were discovered after the first one. The investigation continues.
